I chose to team up with U Perform during my recovery from knee surgery and I really feel like Active Collagen made a difference to my recovery from a potentially career ending injury and the products are easy to incorporate into a busy, active lifestyle.

If you lead an active lifestyle, take part in regular activity or train for a particular sport... you will be creating muscular damage. Collagen can play a critical role in supporting the recovery of that soft tissue.

Collagen is the primary structural protein in the human body and is abundant in our muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones, even our skin, hair, and our nails too. From our early 20s and as our activity levels increase, the rate of collagen production starts to decrease; by up to about 1.5% per year… every year!

A daily collagen supplement like Active Collagen not only provides the body a high-quality bioavailable source of collagen building amino acids, but it has also been proven to stimulate production again by up to 65% in just the first 56 days.

Connective tissue like ligaments and tendons require elasticity and strength to perform their functions properly, TENDOFORTE® Bioactive Collagen Peptides® support these fibres and aid in their recovery, maintaining the flexibility and rigidity they need to perform and reduce the risk of injury.

As active people, our skin is often exposed to cold, wind, UV radiation as well as sweat or chlorine which can damage the layers of skin and lead to further collagen degradation. VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides have been clinically proven to support our skin from within the extracellular matrix, increasing elasticity, hydration, and reducing signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

So, with Active Collagen, not only will you FEEL great, but you will LOOK great too!

U Perform Active Collagen Gel Nutrition and Ingredients Table

How much collagen is there per serving of Active Collagen?

In every 30ml serving of our Active Collagen gel we have a market leading 8g of collagen. Utilising two unique and proven Bioactive Collagen Peptides® and added vitamins and minerals, Active Collagen is clinically proven to maintain our connective tissues (ligaments & tendons), muscles, joints, and bones! Even our hair, skin, and nails too!

How many sachets come in a box of Active Collagen?

There are 15 once-daily gel sachets per box. With 2 boxes, that’s effectively a month’s supply.

How many calories are there per serving of Active Collagen?

Per 30ml serving of active collagen there is just 64kcal.

Is Active Collagen vegan friendly?

Unfortunately, our collagen products are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The Bioactive Collagen Peptides used across our range of collagen sports nutrition are sourced from pasture-fed cattle.

It’s our mission to support athletes and active people the world over, however currently, there simply isn’t a viable plant-based alternative to collagen peptides. Despite this, many of our customers and athletes who are vegan, or vegetarian make an informed choice to forego this restriction and choose to consume our collagen products for the performance and recovery gains.

This is very personal choice, and we are always happy answer any questions you may have. Alternatively, for vegan and vegetarian friendly products, do check out our range of wellness products: active greens, active balance, active berries, and active vitamin D3.

When is the best time to take collagen supplements?

We recommend taking collagen supplements immediately post-exercise; within 30 minutes. The reason for this is that there is good evidence to support it and secondly because it forms a natural part of an effective recovery process by addressing micronutrient intake and hydration as well as protein re-synthesis.

It’s all about creating simple, cost effective, and healthy habits that optimise recovery and performance!

What is collagen?

Collagen is the primary structural protein found in the human body and it accounts for over 30% of total body protein. It’s the scaffolding for the skeleton and the glue that holds the body together. We find this collagen protein in our hair, skin, and nails but also throughout the rest of the body, including bones, teeth, muscles, ligaments, tendons and even our internal organs.

What is a collagen peptide?

A peptide is a shortened chain of naturally occurring amino acids, some of these are essential for the human body and some are non-essential. We can get these amino acids from our natural diet. However, in many cases, we simply can’t get enough of them through our food to maintain the required levels in our bodies for optimal function. This includes key essential amino acids glycine and proline.

Collagen peptides offer specific physiological benefits by stimulating natural body functions. They pass through the intestinal wall and accumulate in the blood after only 15 minutes to be distributed to the connective tissues of the body.

The reason for this is the short chain length of the peptides, their low average molecular weight and their naturally high bioavailability.

Why do you use collagen from a bovine source?

Here at U Perform, we are science-led and evidence-backed in everything we do, which is why we chose to use premium grade, specific bovine collagen peptides across our sports recovery nutrition range. Whereas many of our competitors use only marine collagen.

Bovine sourced collagen is abundant in Type I, II and III collagen, the three most abundant collagen types in the human body. Furthermore, both cattle and humans are mammals and thus share almost identical DNA profiles which is critical for the bioavailability of collagen supplements.

Marine collagen supplements, however, are only rich in Type I collagen and there is also little to no significant evidence to show the effectiveness of marine collagen supplements for the repair and maintenance of connective tissues, joints, and bones in the human body. This is partly due to the collagen source having to cross a species barrier effectively.

Almost all the proven research evidence on collagen available today is based upon bovine sourced edible collagen supplements.

What does Informed Sport certification mean?

Each of our three signature collagen products is fully certified and batch tested under the Informed Sports programme. This means that every batch is pre-market tested for banned substances and contamination of any kind.

Products undergo rigorous testing using ISO 17025 accredited methods to provide the highest level of assurance for athletes. For further information about the testing process, please visit informed-sport.com

Both our co-founders represented Great Britain at elite levels, Greg at two Olympics, Greg & James at World & European Championships... so they both understand & value the importance of products that have been banned substance tested.

Active Collagen is the UK's No.1 Sports Recovery Collagen

The Purpose

U Perform's Active Collagen is the UK's No.1 Sports Recovery Collagen! Formulated specifically to promote recovery from exercise.

The amount of time it takes for your muscles to recover from exercise depends on your fitness levels and the difficulty of your training. The volume, intensity, and duration of your training also all play a role in determining how taxing it is on your body.

However, Active Collagen contains two clinically proven Bioactive Collagen Peptides®, which, along with the additional vitamins and minerals, contribute to the maintenance of ligaments & tendons, soft tissue repair, and protein synthesis.

Daily supplementation with Active Collagen has proven to reduce the risk of soft tissue injuries. Numerous studies have shown how our Bioactive Collagen Peptides® also optimises the recovery from injury. Read the research carried out by the Australian Institute of Sport on Achilles Tendinopathy.

When to take Active Collagen?

One of our most frequently asked questions, and for good reason - the last thing you want to do is feel like you are taking your recovery nutrition products at the wrong time each day. Luckily for you, we're going to give you our top tips to get the most out of your U Perform collagen products and we may even dispel a few myths along the way too!

Our products aren't energy products, rehydration formulas or meal replacements... we're all about the RECOVERY. And that could be from the day-to-day stresses and strains of an active lifestyle or post workout, race, or competition.

So, when we look at recovery, there are a couple of windows of opportunity that would be a great place to start when getting into a sustainable habit to help you take your collagen daily...

Post Exercise

cartoon graphic showing clockface
within 30 mins

After exercise, your body is primed to take on board key nutrients to facilitate recovery and repair. This includes carbohydrates, healthy fats, some fibre, water, electrolytes, and of course... protein! Now there is an ongoing debate as to when is most optimal to take on board these nutrients, with some suggesting that anywhere up to 2-3 hours after exercise is ok. However, when looking at the science, our co-founder and leading Sport Scientist, Professor Greg Whyte, suggests that as soon as possible, within 30-60 mins post-exercise would be most optimal to consume at least a high protein and high carbohydrate snack for those of us who have a busy schedule.

Not only does this help kickstart the refuel and recovery process perhaps as we are getting changed after our training session, but it also allows us to get on with the rest of our day and then in the following 2-3 hours you can then look to consume a larger meal to continue the recovery fuelling. Remember to drink water little and often before, during, and after exercise too!

At Bedtime

cartoon graphic showing three Zzz sleep icon
30 mins before

Our body does its best work recovering and repairing whilst we sleep, during a stage of deep sleep called Slow Wave Sleep (SWS). Supplementing your diet pre-bedtime with a high-quality source of protein such as collagen or casein protein, is an excellent way to maximise overnight recovery, leaving you feeling revitalised and ready to go again the next morning.

If you are going to take Active Collagen before bedtime, we recommend doing so 30 minutes before to allow your body to digest and absorb it fully before you sleep. Digestion is a highly active process and as a result can affect the quality of your sleep so finishing up your food for the day as early as reasonably possible is another great way to optimise sleep, which in turn will optimise your recovery.
